Virat Kohli has added another big chapter to his record-filled ODI career. During India’s first ODI against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram, the former India captain crossed 15,000 ODI runs.

But Kohli did much more than reach 15,000 runs. He scored an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls and helped India chase 296 with eight wickets in hand. His attacking innings also brought several more records, including becoming the fastest batter to reach 15,000 ODI runs.

Kohli Becomes Fastest To 15,000 ODI Runs

Kohli needed 59 runs to reach 15,000 ODI runs before the match. He reached the mark during India’s chase by hitting Alzarri Joseph for a boundary in the 29th over. 

This made Kohli only the second batter after Tendulkar to cross 15,000 ODI runs. He also broke Tendulkar’s record for reaching the milestone in the fewest innings. Kohli reached it in his 303rd ODI innings, while Tendulkar needed 377 innings. 

Kohli therefore got there 74 innings faster. Tendulkar still leads the ODI run charts with 18,426 runs, while Kohli moved to 15,080.

Most Runs In Men’s ODIs

After reaching the milestone, Kohli said that records have never been his main focus during his international career.

“Well, thank you firstly for the kind words. Well, my focus has never really been on these milestones, so to say. It’s just understanding the situation along the course of just doing the job for the team, whatever. Achievements come along.”

Kohli also spoke about the need to play more aggressively at this stage of his career.

“I’ve got a challenge at this stage of my career to kind of up the ante and play a gear or two higher,” and yeah, that was exciting for me to work on. Again, it excites you when you have to unlock a new version at this stage of your career, which will eventually help any team that you play for, be it playing for India or in the IPL.”

Kohli also explained his approach to attacking cricket. 

“I promised myself I’m going to play positively because I can. So I’m going to continue to play like that, but not be reckless.”

He wants to stay positive without taking unnecessary risks.

Kohli Surpasses Sachin For Most ODI Runs In India

Kohli also broke another major record in India.

Before the match, Kohli had 6,867 ODI runs in India. Tendulkar held the previous record with 6,976 runs.

Kohli needed 110 runs to go past Tendulkar.

He scored 139* and finished with 7,006 ODI runs in India.

Kohli became the first batter to cross 7,000 ODI runs in India. He also went past Tendulkar’s total of 6,976.

Ricky Ponting is third on the list with 5,406 ODI runs in Australia.

Another Big Record In Successful Run Chases

Kohli has also built a huge record in successful ODI chases.

His latest win added another entry to that list.

Kohli now has 112 wins in successful ODI run chases. That took him past Ponting, who has 111.

Kohli’s 139* was not a normal Kohli innings.

He hit 10 fours and nine sixes during his knock.

The nine sixes became a new record for Kohli in an ODI innings. He had never hit more than eight sixes in one ODI innings before this match.

Kohli’s 53 Runs Against Alzarri Joseph Also Made History

Kohli also attacked Alzarri Joseph during his innings.

He scored 53 runs off Joseph in the match.

This took his career runs against Joseph to the second-highest total he has scored against one bowler in an ODI.

Kohli Equals Tendulkar’s List A Century Record

Kohli’s unbeaten 139 was also his 60th List A century.

That took him level with Tendulkar for the most List A hundreds.

However, Kohli needed far fewer innings to reach the number.

Most 100s In List A Cricket

Kohli reached 60 List A hundreds in 338 innings.

Tendulkar needed 538 innings to reach the same number.

Another Tendulkar Record Matched In India

Kohli also matched another Tendulkar record in India.

His century was his 42nd international hundred in India.

That put him level with Tendulkar, who also scored 42 international centuries on home soil.

Cricbuzz’s match data shows that Kohli reached 42 home international hundreds in his 260th innings. Tendulkar needed 313 innings to reach the same number.

The latest century was also Kohli’s 55th ODI hundred.

It was his 10th ODI century against West Indies.

That took him level with his 10 ODI hundreds against Sri Lanka. No other opponent has seen Kohli score more ODI hundreds.

What Happened In The Match?

West Indies scored 295/7 after Justin Greaves made 101 and John Campbell scored 62.

Kuldeep Yadav then helped India take control of the game. He finished with 4/40 and took important wickets in the middle overs.

India then chased the target in style.

Shubman Gill and Kohli led the chase.

Gill scored 110 off 108 balls. Kohli smashed an unbeaten 139 from just 88 balls.

The pair added 151 runs for the second wicket.

India reached 300/2 in 41.4 overs and won by eight wickets with 50 balls remaining. You can check the full scoreboard of this match HERE. 

After the match, Kohli said he enjoys playing for India.

“I enjoy each and every minute that I’m out there playing for India, because I understand that, as I said, I could have been a possibility that I wouldn’t be standing here.”

Virat Kohli is thankful for whatever he has now in his life. 

What Comes Next For Virat Kohli? A 100 Centuries?

Virat Kohli has now scored 86 international centuries. He is only 14 hundreds away from Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 international centuries.

The 2027 ODI World Cup is still ahead, giving Kohli more chances to move closer to the record. India already have ODI series planned against West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. A few more series are being discussed, along with one against South Africa.

The 2027 Asia Cup could give Kohli more matches if the tournament is played in the ODI format. India could also play at least nine league matches at the 2027 World Cup. They could play two more matches if they reach the final.

This means Kohli could have around 30 to 35 ODI opportunities before and during the World Cup. However, the exact number is not confirmed. It will depend on India’s final schedule and their progress in the tournament.

Kohli needs around 14 more centuries in 30 to 35 matches to reach 100 international hundreds. That would be a huge challenge. Scoring a century every two or three matches is extremely difficult in international cricket.

But this is Virat Kohli. And this is Cricket. You cannot discount Virat, especially in an ODI format where he is a beast. 

In cricket, anything can happen.
