There was a time when Matthew Breetzke was not sure if South Africa had a place for him. The young batter was only 22 years old. His career was still at an early stage. He had limited chances, and South African cricket was going through a difficult period.
Then, a completely different opportunity came his way. It offered more money, a new country and a possible new cricket career. Breetzke came very close to taking that opportunity. But at the last moment, he made a decision that could have changed his whole career.
Today, the same player is making records for South Africa. His batting is getting attention around the world, and his ODI numbers show that he could become one of South Africa’s biggest batting stars.
So, what really happened?
Matthew Breetzke Was Once Close to Moving to the USA
To understand Breetzke’s story, we need to go back to the 2020-21 period.
Matthew Breetzke was only 22 and was still trying to make his name in South African domestic cricket. He had played for Eastern Province and the Warriors, but he was still far from becoming an international player.
At that time, South African cricket was facing serious problems.
The Mzansi Super League had ended, while the SA20 had not started yet. This meant domestic players had fewer chances to earn money and grow their careers through franchise cricket.
There were also ongoing debates about the country’s quota system. Some players were worried about how teams were giving opportunities to different players.
The domestic system was also going through uncertainty. Cricket South Africa was dealing with financial and administrative issues. The change from the six-team franchise system to a bigger provincial structure also created doubts about professional contracts.
For a young player like Breetzke, there was no clear idea of what his future in South African cricket would look like.
Then, the USA opportunity arrived.
The USA Offer Was Very Hard to Ignore
Matthew Breetzke came very close to signing a deal that would have taken him to the United States.
Reports said that he was earning around US$8,000 per year in South African domestic cricket at that time.
The USA opportunity was worth around US$50,000 per year. For a 22-year-old cricketer, that was a huge difference. Breetzke was also not the only South African player who was looking outside the country.
Several South African cricketers had already moved towards the USA. They wanted better financial opportunities and a chance to build their careers there. The USA was becoming an option for players who were not sure about their future in South Africa.
Breetzke was very close to becoming one of them. But he stopped.
Breetzke Chose His South Africa Dream Over More Money
The biggest part of Breetzke’s story is that he did not turn down the USA opportunity because it was not good.
It was.
He was very close to signing the deal. But he still believed that his biggest dream was to play for South Africa.
Looking back at that time, Breetzke explained what he was thinking.
“I was in a mind frame of wanting to leave and go. Obviously, my primary goal was to play for South Africa, and I couldn’t really see that,” Matthew Breetzke said.
That was the difficult part.
He wanted to play for South Africa, but at that time, he could not clearly see a path to the Proteas.
Still, he decided to stay.
“But my mindset was to put my head down and work hard to play for South Africa. In hindsight, I think it’s been the right call.”
Breetzke also made it clear that the USA opportunity was real.
“I was obviously close. They were trying to recruit me, but I decided against it.”
That one decision changed his career.

His Career Started Moving in a New Direction
When Matthew Breetzke made that decision, there was no guarantee that things would work out. His numbers at that time did not show that international success was close.
After 73 first-class innings, he had an average of around 30. His T20 average was around 23, while his strike rate was around 115. The South African national team still looked far away.
But Breetzke stayed and worked on his game instead of choosing the safer financial option. From the 2021-22 season, his numbers started to improve.
His first-class average moved towards the 40s. His T20 numbers also improved a lot. More importantly, he became more consistent.
That consistency eventually helped him reach international cricket. Breetzke made his T20I debut for South Africa in 2023 against Australia. He made his Test debut against Bangladesh in 2024. But ODI cricket changed his profile completely.
Then Came the 150 That Changed Everything
Breetzke made his ODI debut against New Zealand in February 2025. Most players would simply be happy to get through their first international game. Breetzke did much more than that.
He scored 150 runs. That innings broke the record for the highest individual score on ODI debut. He passed the previous record of 148, which Desmond Haynes had set.
His second ODI was also impressive. He scored 83 runs.
After his first two ODI innings, Breetzke had already scored 233 runs. At that time, this was also a record for a batter in his first two ODI innings.
Suddenly, the player who had once been unsure about his place in South African cricket was making ODI history.

What makes Breetzke’s rise even more interesting is that he has not depended on just one big innings. He has kept scoring runs.
By September 2026, after 14 ODI innings, Breetzke had scored 822 runs at an outstanding average of 63.23. He had already scored two centuries and six fifties.
His latest ODI century came against Australia on September 24, 2026. He scored 112 from 106 balls. That innings showed what makes his batting so effective.
Breetzke does not rush his innings. He knows when to attack and when to wait. The right-handed batter rotates the strike, builds partnerships and then scores faster when the situation gives him the chance.
This ability to pace an innings is one of the main reasons behind his impressive early ODI record.
He is not only hitting boundaries. He is building his innings.
There Is Something Different About His Batting Style
Breetzke also looks like a player who becomes fully focused when he bats.
His movements and reactions can be easy to notice when he is at the crease.
He looks completely focused.
There is a lot of energy in the way he gets ready for the next ball, reacts to deliveries and stays focused on his own game.
We have seen something similar with players such as Steve Smith.

Breetzke is still at the start of his international career, so comparing their achievements would be too early.

Breetzke is now showing some similar signs.

Of course, Matthew Breetzke still has a long way to go before he can match established players such as Smith or Labuschagne in terms of career achievements.

Breetzke’s situation was part of this wider issue.
He had a much better financial option in front of him when South African cricket was going through uncertainty.
But he stayed.

There is almost a full-circle feeling to Breetzke’s career now.
He once thought about moving to the USA because he needed an opportunity.
Today, he can go to the USA as a South African international cricketer.
In 2026, Breetzke eventually played in Major League Cricket for Seattle Orcas.
He made an immediate impact by scoring 66 on his MLC debut.
The league that could once have become his alternative career path had now become another part of his international career.
That difference tells the whole story.
Years ago, Breetzke was close to moving to America because South Africa did not seem to give him enough certainty.
Today, he arrives in America under completely different circumstances.
He is a Proteas player.
He is an established international batter.
And people are talking about him as one of the most exciting young names in ODI cricket.
The Decision That Changed Matthew Breetzke’s Life
We can never know what would have happened if Breetzke had signed that USA contract in 2021.
Maybe he would have become an important player for the USA.
Maybe his career would have taken a different successful path.
But we do know what happened after he stayed.
He worked his way into the South African setup.
He made his international debut.
He scored a record-breaking 150 on his ODI debut.
He continued to score runs.
And by September 2026, he had 822 ODI runs from just 14 innings, with a 63.23 average, two hundreds and six fifties.
Most importantly, he has done it like a batter who understands his game.
He can handle pressure, build an innings, and can change gears. And he looks completely comfortable in his own batting world.
A few years ago, Matthew Breetzke had to choose between a big financial opportunity in America and an uncertain dream in South Africa. Today, that dream is real. He did not choose the easier path and chose to trust himself.
And now, every time he walks out to bat for South Africa, the result of that decision becomes harder to ignore.
Matthew Breetzke has the ability to become a great Test batter and even a strong all-format player. His journey is only starting, and it will be interesting to see what comes next.
