India vs New Zealand T20Is 2026: New Zealand have made their first big move for the home summer by naming a strong 16-member squad for the T20I series against India, starting October 22. The Black Caps have picked experienced batters, returning players and several fast bowlers.
However, one important all-rounder will miss the series due to injury, while an experienced pacer returns after a long break, giving New Zealand more options against the world champions.
New Zealand announce 16-member squad for India T20I series
Mitchell Santner will captain New Zealand in the five-match T20I series against India. The squad has 13 players who helped New Zealand reach the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, where they lost to India.
Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman and Tim Seifert give New Zealand plenty of experience and power with the bat.
Michael Bracewell is also back, while Adam Milne returns after more than a year away from international cricket. The 34-year-old last played for New Zealand against Zimbabwe. His return makes New Zealand’s pace attack even stronger.
Head coach Rob Walter is excited about starting the home summer against India.
“It’s going to be awesome to welcome India to our shores and get summer underway,” said Walter.
Fans are also excited about the tour. New Zealand Cricket said more than 76,000 tickets had already been sold a month before the first match.
Rachin Ravindra ruled out after shoulder injury
One big player missing from the New Zealand T20I squad vs India is Rachin Ravindra. He dislocated his right shoulder while trying to take a diving catch during a promotional shoot in Auckland. The injury has ruled him out of all five T20Is.
Ravindra is expected to need around six weeks to recover.
“We’re gutted for Rachin,” said New Zealand’s head coach Rob Walter. “He’s going to play a big role for us this summer so it’s important that he doesn’t rush his rehab, but we’re optimistic he’ll be back for the ODIs.”
New Zealand hope Ravindra can return for the ODI series against India, starting November 4. Ben Sears is also unavailable as he continues to recover from an ankle injury.

New Zealand’s pace attack could be its biggest strength
Fast bowling could be the biggest strength of this New Zealand squad for the India series. The Black Caps have picked seven pace options: Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Nathan Smith and Adam Milne.
Ferguson and Milne bring speed, while Henry offers experience and control. Jamieson’s height can help him get extra bounce. Duffy is another useful option, while Foulkes and Smith add younger choices.
Home conditions could also help these fast bowlers. New Zealand can change their attack based on the pitch and rest players during the five-match series.
Walter believes his team can challenge India.
“India is a quality team and a challenging opposition, so to take them on in our own conditions in front of Kiwi fans is really exciting.”
He added, “We’ve got a near full-strength squad that covers all bases and I’m excited to see how we compete against the current T20 world champions.”
New Zealand certainly have plenty of bowling options.
Finn Allen and Tim Seifert make New Zealand dangerous at the top
New Zealand also have plenty of power in their batting lineup. Finn Allen and Tim Seifert could play important roles at the top in the India vs New Zealand series, after performing well in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Allen played a brilliant knock in the semifinal against South Africa. He scored an unbeaten century from only 33 balls. Seifert also played well in the same match, scoring 58 from 33 balls as New Zealand won by nine wickets.
The Black Caps also have Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell and Mark Chapman. All four bring plenty of experience to the batting lineup.
Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell also give New Zealand useful all-round options. Their presence gives the team more batting depth without making the bowling attack weaker.
India vs New Zealand series still important despite bigger goals
T20 cricket is not the only big focus for India and New Zealand. The ODI World Cup 2027 is getting closer, so both teams will also start preparing their ODI squads. Test cricket is important too because teams are fighting for World Test Championship points.
Still, both teams need to focus on T20 cricket as well.
India and New Zealand met in the 2026 T20 World Cup final, where India won by 96 runs in Ahmedabad. India became the first team to win back-to-back Men’s T20 World Cups and also the first to win three titles.
After winning in 2024 and 2026, India could now chase three T20 World Cup titles in a row in the future.
New Zealand have a different target. They reached the T20 World Cup final in 2021 and 2026 but lost both times. They are still searching for their first title.
So, this five-match series is important for both teams. They can try different combinations, give younger players chances, and start building their teams for the next T20 World Cup.

New Zealand will miss Rachin Ravindra, but they still have a strong squad with experienced batters, fast bowlers and all-rounders. The series against India will help them test players and prepare for the future.
