India’s next phase of white-ball cricket has already raised several big questions. The India squad for the upcoming West Indies series brings back some familiar names, gives chances to new players and, most importantly, includes Rohit Sharma despite the questions around his ODI future.

Rohit and Virat Kohli will play in India’s three-match ODI series against West Indies. Shubman Gill will continue as captain, while KL Rahul will be the vice-captain. However, the biggest talking points go beyond the names in the squad.

Rohit Sharma is still in India’s ODI plans

Rohit Sharma’s ODI future has been one of the biggest questions around Indian cricket in recent times.

The former captain has said that he wants to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, reports had suggested that the selectors were thinking about moving on from him. These reports became stronger after India replaced Rohit with Gill as ODI captain in 2025.

His selection in the India squad for West Indies now shows that India still has him in its plans for the time being.

Rohit’s recent form will also be important for the selectors. He has not been consistent in every game, but his latest ODI innings was an impressive 138-run knock at Lord’s.

Now, Rohit will get another chance to prove himself when India play three ODIs against West Indies from September 27.

The bigger question is whether India can plan for the 2027 World Cup with both Rohit and Gill, or whether the team will slowly move towards a bigger transition.

Hardik Pandya is the biggest name missing

Rohit’s return is important, but the absence of Hardik Pandya is another major talking point.

Pandya has not played competitive cricket since the IPL 2026 season because of a series of injuries. He was also picked for India’s Afghanistan ODI series but suffered another setback before the matches.

His absence creates an important balance problem for India.

Pandya gives India much more than just batting or bowling. He can contribute in both departments. His bowling gives the team an extra option, while his batting adds strength to the lower middle order.

The current IND squad for WI has players who can contribute with both bat and ball. Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy can provide some balance. However, replacing Pandya’s complete role will not be easy.

Nitish was also originally part of India’s Asian Games squad. He has now moved into the ODI group for the IND vs WI series.

Pandya’s return could become one of the biggest selection stories as India prepares for the 2027 World Cup.

Dhruv Jurel gets the nod, but where is Rishabh Pant?

Another big talking point is the absence of Rishabh Pant.

Pant has been one of India’s key wicketkeeper-batters across formats. However, he is not part of the ODI or T20I squads for this cycle.

Instead, Dhruv Jurel has made the ODI squad, while KL Rahul remains the likely first-choice wicketkeeper.

Jurel has also continued to improve with the bat. He recently scored an unbeaten 115 in Sri Lanka. That performance gives the selectors another reason to consider him as a middle-order option.

For now, India is giving Jurel a chance while Pant remains outside the squad.

This does not mean the door is closed for Pant. However, the competition for the wicketkeeper-batter spot will be interesting to watch in the coming months.

The India ODI squad includes experienced stars, regular players and some new faces.

The three-match India vs West Indies ODI series will start in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on September 27.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi gets another big opportunity

Sooryavanshi’s selection is one of the biggest talking points from the T20 squad.

The 15-year-old has earned another chance to play with India’s senior international players in the five-match series.

He will be part of a group that also includes Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and Shreyas Iyer.

His selection is not only about his age. The selectors are also giving him a chance to experience international cricket at a very early stage of his career.

It also gives India a chance to see how he develops alongside experienced international players.

The India T20 squad has also attracted a lot of attention because of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

India will play a five-match T20I series against West Indies from October 6. Shreyas Iyer will lead the team, while Tilak Varma will be the vice-captain.

What changed in the Japan T20 and Asian Games squad?

India’s schedule will become even busier before the West Indies T20Is.

India will play a one-off T20I against Japan on September 22. Six days later, the team will begin its Asian Games campaign.

Two important changes have taken place.

Varun Chakaravarthy will miss both the Japan T20I and Asian Games because of a side strain. Vipraj Nigam has replaced him.

Nitish Kumar Reddy was originally part of the Asian Games squad. However, India has now moved him into the ODI squad for the India vs West Indies series.

India will enter the Asian Games at the quarter-final stage on September 28.

New faces and a few important changes

The ODI squad also gives opportunities to some new players.

Naman Dhir and Auqib Nabi have received their maiden ODI call-ups. Gurnoor Brar has also made the squad.

At the same time, the absence of Pant and Pandya leaves two important questions for the selectors.
