Sports betting controversy as LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo enter prediction market

US Leagues Demand Action on Sports Betting Harassment as LeBron and Giannis Enter Prediction Markets

The connection between professional sports and sports betting has become more complicated than ever. On one side, some of the biggest NBA stars are joining the growing prediction-market business. On the other side, athletes, coaches and their families are dealing with a serious problem linked to betting: abuse, threats and harassment from angry bettors.

That contrast is now getting more attention.

The NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and MLS, along with their players’ unions, have asked US gaming regulators to take stronger action against people who threaten or harass athletes because of sports bets. This comes at an interesting time because NBA stars LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo have recently become involved with prediction-market companies.

So, how do these two developments connect? And why do leagues want more protection for athletes while players are becoming more involved with prediction-market companies?

Major Leagues Want Sports Betting Abusers Banned for Life

According to ESPN’s Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the five major US professional sports leagues and their players’ unions sent a joint letter to gaming regulators in 35 states and Washington, D.C.

The message was simple. People who threaten or seriously harass players, coaches, officials, team staff, or their families because of sports bets should lose their right to place legal bets.

The leagues want permanent sports betting bans for people who commit this kind of abuse.

They also want betting companies and regulators to share more information about abusive bettors. If a person gets banned from betting in one state, the leagues want that ban to apply in other states too.

As per the Associated Press, only a few states, including Ohio, West Virginia, Louisiana and Wyoming, already have systems to keep such “bad actors” away from betting.

The reason behind the request is clear. Sports betting gives fans another way to follow games, but losing a bet never gives anyone the right to threaten a player or their family.

That brings the issue back to the NBA.

LeBron James Has Now Entered Polymarket

While leagues are trying to deal with the darker side of betting, LeBron James has entered the prediction-market world through an exclusive partnership with Polymarket.

As per Front Office Sports, James teased the partnership with a short video. In the video, he entered a fictional “Polymarket HQ” and chose the sports floor. The partnership is expected to focus on football at first instead of NBA-related markets.

The move also came after James’ previous DraftKings ambassador deal ended.

However, this does not mean LeBron has become a sports bettor. His reported connection with Polymarket is a commercial partnership. The exact details, including his payment, the length of the deal, and whether he has any equity, have not been made public.

The timing still stands out.

Polymarket and rival Kalshi are working hard to grow in the sports prediction market. Both companies are bringing major athletes and sports personalities into their marketing efforts.

Giannis Went One Step Further

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s relationship with Kalshi is different from LeBron’s.

In February, the Milwaukee Bucks star became the first active NBA player to directly invest in Kalshi, according to TechCrunch and Front Office Sports.

That difference is important.

Giannis did more than promote the company. He became a shareholder. Kalshi also said it would work with him on marketing and live events.

There are still some rules around his investment.

Giannis cannot trade on NBA-related markets because of rules against insider trading and market manipulation. Reports have also said that the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement allows players to advertise for sports betting companies and hold passive investments within certain limits, as long as they do not promote wagers connected to the league.

This rule matters because Kalshi offers markets based on sports results.

The platform even had a market about whether Giannis himself would get traded before the 2026 NBA trade deadline. The Athletic reported on the market, and other outlets later cited the report. The market attracted strong interest and trading activity.

Giannis’ investment raised questions about conflict of interest and perception. However, nobody has found that he did anything wrong.

What Exactly Are Prediction Markets?

This is where the issue becomes harder to understand.

Platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi call themselves prediction markets instead of traditional sportsbooks.

Users can buy and sell contracts based on whether something will happen. For example, a contract could ask whether a team will win a championship, whether a political candidate will win an election, or whether another event will happen.

The value of these contracts can change as people change their views about the chances of an outcome.

This model has helped prediction markets grow into areas such as politics, economics, entertainment, cryptocurrency, and culture.

But sports have become one of the biggest areas of competition between these companies.

That is why the involvement of major athletes matters.

The Bigger Question for the NBA

LeBron’s Polymarket partnership and Giannis’ Kalshi investment are not directly connected to the leagues’ demand for stronger action against abusive bettors.

Neither player has been accused of threatening anyone or supporting harassment.

Instead, these two moves show how quickly professional sports are changing.

Athletes are becoming partners, promoters, and investors in prediction-market companies. At the same time, leagues are trying to protect players, coaches, and their families from the problems linked to sports betting.

This creates a difficult situation.

There is nothing wrong with an athlete working with a prediction-market company if the deal follows league rules and the law. However, these partnerships can still raise questions, especially when an athlete has a direct connection to the sport involved in a market.

The leagues’ request also shows that the issue is bigger than whether prediction markets are “betting” or “trading.”

The bigger concern is what happens after people lose bets. Losing money does not give anyone the right to abuse or threaten an athlete. If threats target a player’s family, the situation becomes even more serious.

As LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo bring more attention to prediction markets, leagues and regulators will need clearer rules. Sports must also make sure athletes and their families stay safe.
