India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test Preview: India enter the second Test with a 1-0 lead after beating Sri Lanka by 165 runs in Galle. Sri Lanka now need to win in Colombo to keep the series alive.
The second Test starts on August 23 at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC), Colombo, and will continue until August 27. Both teams have a lot to play for, but Sri Lanka face more pressure after India’s strong win in the first Test.
India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test: What Happened in Galle?
India won the first Test because of two excellent performances. Devdutt Padikkal scored 167, while Manav Suthar took 10 wickets in the match.
India scored 462 in their first innings. KL Rahul made 82 and Dhruv Jurel scored 51. Sri Lanka replied with 284, giving India a good lead.
India then scored 193 in the second innings and gave Sri Lanka a target of 372. Rishabh Pant played an attacking innings of 66, which helped India set a strong target.
Sri Lanka tried to fight back through Sonal Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva. However, Suthar took 6/55 and ended their fight. Sri Lanka were all out for 206, and India won by 165 runs.
Suthar finished with 10 wickets, while Padikkal’s 167 made him one of the biggest stars of the match.
Now, both teams face different conditions and may make changes to their playing XIs.
Colombo Pitch Report: What Can We Expect at SSC?
The Sinhalese Sports Club Ground usually provides a more balanced pitch than some of Sri Lanka’s more spin-friendly Test grounds.
The numbers also show an interesting pattern. Teams batting first have won 16 of the 46 Tests at SSC, while teams bowling first have also won 16. The average first-innings score is 323, while the average second-innings score is 354.
The average third-innings score drops to 273, and the fourth-innings average falls to 182, as per Cricbuzz. This suggests that batting can become much harder as the Test goes on.
The highest score at the venue is 756/5, while the lowest is 81 all out. The highest successful chase is 326/5.
Sri Lankan officials are reportedly considering a balanced pitch instead of a pitch that offers huge help to spin.
One SLC official said: “At this moment, the thinking is for a well-balanced pitch like the one you saw at Galle. Sri Lanka are also without some experienced players like Chandi (Dinesh Chandimal), Kusal (Mendis) and (Pathum) Nissanka. So, we need to give our young batters a chance also,” a SLC official said.
The official also said: “Of course, it all depends on what finally the team wants for the match, you know, something that gives them the best chance to win and draw the series,” he added.
The pitch could make the toss very important. India have already shown that they can play Sri Lanka’s spin well. Sri Lanka will need their young batters to handle Suthar, Jadeja and possibly another Indian spinner.

Colombo Weather Report: August 23-27
Cloudy weather and rain may interrupt play on all five days of the Test. Temperatures in Colombo are expected to stay between 26°C and 31°C. There could be scattered showers on the first four days, with more rain expected on the final day.
Both teams may therefore have to deal with rain breaks and changing conditions.
Toss Will Be Very Important
The toss could have a big effect at SSC.
The venue’s numbers show that batting gets harder later in the match. The average first-innings score is 323, while the average fourth-innings score is only 182.
The team that wins the toss will likely choose to bat first.
India would want to score big early and then use the changing pitch later in the match. Sri Lanka may also prefer batting first because the fresh pitch could give their batters the best chance to score runs.
Players to Watch Out For: India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test
Here are the players to watch out for in the India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test.
India: Devdutt Padikkal
Padikkal is the biggest name after his brilliant 167 in Galle. It was his first Test century and showed that he can play spin patiently while still scoring runs.
He also scored 44 in the second innings.
Another strong performance in Colombo would help him secure his place at No. 3.
India: Manav Suthar
Suthar has become one of India’s key players in this series. His 10 wickets in Galle showed that he can bowl long spells, stay accurate and take wickets when the pitch helps spin.
If the SSC pitch starts turning later, Suthar could again become India’s biggest threat.
Sri Lanka: Sonal Dinusha
Dinusha scored a century in the first innings and 84 in the second innings in Galle. His batting will be very important for Sri Lanka’s inexperienced batting line-up.
Sri Lanka: Dhananjaya de Silva
With Chandimal, Mendis and Nissanka unavailable, Dhananjaya has even more responsibility. His batting and leadership will be very important if Sri Lanka want to level the series.

WTC Scenario: What Happens If India or Sri Lanka Win?
The second Test also matters for the World Test Championship 2025-27.
India currently have 64 points from 10 matches, with five wins, four losses and one draw. Their PCT is 53.33%.
Sri Lanka have 20 points from five matches, with one win, two losses and two draws. Their PCT is 33.33%.
A Test win gives the winning team 12 WTC points.
If India win
India would move to:
76 points from 11 matches — 57.58% PCT
This would give India another boost in their WTC final race.
If Sri Lanka win
Sri Lanka would move to:
32 points from 6 matches — 44.44% PCT
That would be a big improvement from 33.33% and would bring Sri Lanka back into the WTC race.
So, even though India lead the series, this Test is important for both teams in the WTC.
Conclusion
India have the momentum, confidence and a 1-0 lead. Sri Lanka have injuries, a new-look batting line-up and the pressure of needing a win.
The biggest question is whether SSC will produce the balanced pitch Sri Lankan officials have mentioned or become more helpful for spin as the match goes on.
Sri Lanka need their young batters to survive the first two days and give their bowlers enough runs to defend. India will look to follow the same plan they used in Galle: score big, bowl with discipline and create pressure in the fourth innings.
The toss, weather and pitch could all play important roles, so Colombo may produce a very different Test from Galle.
