India vs China Hockey: 44 Years of Waiting Ends! How India’s Women’s Hockey Team Beat China to Seal Gold and 2028 Olympics Spot

India vs China Hockey: Women’s Hockey Asian Games Gold Medal Match – The Indian women’s hockey team had waited 44 years for this moment. India had come close to Asian Games gold several times in recent editions, but the team finally finished the job in 2026. India beat defending champions China 1-0 in the women’s hockey final to win the Asian Games gold medal for the first time since 1982.

The win gave India much more than a historic gold medal. It also gave the team a direct qualification spot for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. After missing the Paris 2024 Olympics, India have now confirmed their return to the Games in 2028.

Lalremsiami gives India the goal

The India vs China Hockey final was expected to be a close game, and it was. China started strongly and put India under pressure. The Indian team spent a lot of time defending in its own half.

However, India found the first goal in the opening quarter.

In the 10th minute, Lalremsiami scored with a brilliant tomahawk shot after getting the ball from Sakshi. She turned quickly and fired the ball into the corner of the Chinese goal. India took a 1-0 lead.

The goal made the moment even more special for Lalremsiami. The final was also her 200th senior international match for India. Hockey India confirmed that she reached the milestone during the gold-medal match against China.

India ended the first quarter with the lead. The team also looked strong in defence. China had more possession but could not create a clear scoring chance.

Savita Punia makes a big save

China increased the pressure in the second quarter and earned a penalty stroke in the 22nd minute.

It became one of the biggest moments of the India vs China Hockey final.

Savita Punia made a brilliant low save to her left and stopped Zhang Ying from scoring. Her save kept India 1-0 ahead.

The Indian defence also made several important blocks. Navneet Kaur cleared one Chinese effort off the goal line. India’s defenders and rushers also worked together to deal with China’s penalty corners.

China kept attacking, but India went into half-time with its 1-0 lead still intact.

India defend their lead

The second half became even tougher for India.

China controlled much of the possession and made several attacks into the Indian circle. India had fewer chances to attack and spent long periods defending.

India also faced another difficult moment when Salima Tete and her teammates had to deal with repeated Chinese attacks. Salima briefly left the field with the physio after taking a knock.

China earned another penalty corner in the third quarter, but India’s defence stopped the danger once again.

The final 15 minutes became all about protecting the lead.

India did not send too many players forward. Instead, the team stayed in its defensive shape and focused on protecting the one-goal advantage.

China also removed its goalkeeper late in the match. They brought on an extra outfield player to try to find an equaliser.

But India did not give them a chance.

When the final hooter sounded, the scoreboard read China 0-1 India.

The Indian players celebrated on the field as coach Sjoerd Marijne ran onto the pitch.

After 44 years, India had won the Asian Games women’s hockey gold medal again.

India’s Asian Games women’s hockey medal record

India won its first women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games in 1982 in New Delhi. Women’s field hockey made its Asian Games debut at those Games, and India won the first gold medal. You can check the medal tally HERE.

India won several more medals after that, but the team could not win gold again before 2026.

Before the 2026 Games, India had won seven Asian Games medals:

  • 1982 – Gold
  • 1986 – Bronze
  • 1998 – Silver
  • 2006 – Bronze
  • 2014 – Bronze
  • 2018 – Silver
  • 2022/2023 – Bronze
  • 2026 – Gold

The previous Asian Games took place in Hangzhou in 2023, where India won bronze. Hockey India’s medal records show the team’s results across these editions.

With the 2026 gold, India now has eight Asian Games medals in women’s hockey: 2 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze.

The biggest gap came between India’s two gold medals. The team had to wait from 1982 to 2026, which is 44 years.

A big comeback after missing Paris 2024

This gold becomes even more important because of India’s recent journey.

India produced a historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. It was the team’s best-ever finish in women’s hockey at the Olympics.

However, India then suffered a major setback.

The team missed the Paris 2024 Olympics after losing 0-1 to Japan in the third-place match of the Olympic Qualifiers in Ranchi. India finished fourth, while Japan took the final Olympic qualification spot from that tournament.

India also faced relegation from the FIH Women’s Pro League after finishing last in the 2024-25 season.

But the team made a strong comeback in 2026.

India won the FIH Women’s Nations Cup in June after beating New Zealand 2-0 in the final. The win helped India earn promotion back to the Pro League.

The team then finished fifth at the 2026 FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup. India followed that result with its biggest achievement of the year by winning Asian Games gold.

Hockey India had already identified the Asian Games as India’s route to a direct qualification spot for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

India are back at the Olympics

The biggest reward from the India vs China Hockey final is not only the gold medal.

India are now officially back in the Olympics.

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will mark the team’s return to the Games after missing Paris 2024. India went from a fourth-place finish at Tokyo 2021 to missing Paris, but the team have now secured their place at Los Angeles through their Asian Games gold.

The journey has come full circle.

A goal from Lalremsiami, a crucial save from Savita Punia, a strong defensive display and 60 minutes of hard work against China have given India Asian Games gold, an end to the 44-year wait and a place at the 2028 Olympics.

For a team that went through a difficult period after Tokyo, this gold marks another major step in its comeback.
