India have announced their squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand. One experienced name has made a surprise return after being away from international cricket for almost four years.
The India squad now has a mix of young players, recent performers and experienced names as the team prepares for another important white-ball series.
The biggest talking point is not only the return of an experienced fast bowler. India will also be without their main pace bowler, while another senior spinner has returned after dealing with an injury.
Veteran Fast Bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns to India Squad
The biggest surprise in the India squad is the return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
The 36-year-old fast bowler has earned a recall for the five-match India vs New Zealand T20I series. It is his first India selection since November 2022. Interestingly, his last international match also came against New Zealand in Napier after the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Bhuvneshwar has earned his return with his performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He took 45 wickets across the last two IPL seasons. He also had an excellent IPL 2026, taking 28 wickets at an economy rate of 7.95.
His return could also help India in New Zealand conditions. New Zealand can help swing bowlers, especially with the new ball. Bhuvneshwar’s experience could give India another reliable powerplay option.
The bigger question is whether this is only a short-term recall or whether the selectors see him as a serious option for India’s future T20I plans.

Why Is Jasprit Bumrah Missing From the India Squad?
Another major talking point is the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.
India have rested Bumrah for the T20I part of the New Zealand tour as they manage the workload of their main fast bowler. He remains an important part of India’s plans for future white-ball and red-ball matches. The New Zealand tour will also include ODIs and Tests later.
India have a busy schedule, so protecting Bumrah’s long-term fitness is more important than playing him in every T20I.
His absence also gives the selectors a chance to test other fast-bowling options. Arshdeep Singh remains in the squad, while Mayank Yadav and Bhuvneshwar offer different types of pace.
For Bhuvneshwar, Bumrah’s absence could create an even bigger chance to show what he can still offer at the international level.
Varun Chakaravarthy Returns After Injury Setback
Varun Chakaravarthy is another important name in the India T20I squad.
The mystery spinner has had a difficult 2026 because of injuries. He had already spent around two months out with a hamstring injury before returning for India’s T20I series against Afghanistan.
However, his comeback did not last long.
During the first T20I in Delhi on September 13, Varun felt sudden discomfort in the left side of his abdomen while bowling his third over. Scans showed a side strain, which ruled him out of the remaining two matches.
The injury also forced him to miss India’s one-off T20I against Japan and the 2026 Asian Games. He had initially been selected for both events.
There was still some positive news from his Afghanistan comeback. Varun bowled his full four overs in the first game, took 1/16 and bowled 13 dot balls.
Now, after another period of recovery, he has returned to the India squad for the New Zealand T20Is.
His return comes at the expense of Ravi Bishnoi, who was part of India’s recent T20I setup.

A Veteran Return Makes the India Squad More Interesting
The New Zealand T20I squad was always expected to have many familiar names. However, the selectors have made it more interesting by bringing back an experienced fast bowler who has not played for India in almost four years.
Bhuvneshwar’s recall also shows that strong IPL performances can still help a player return to the international team, even at the age of 36.
At the same time, Bumrah’s rest shows that India are looking beyond this five-match T20I series. Managing their biggest fast-bowling asset while giving opportunities to experienced and young players could be important for India’s bigger assignments.
With Varun Chakaravarthy also back from injury, India now have another important spin option.
Will Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return be a short-term opportunity, or can the veteran fast bowler earn his way back into India’s regular T20I plans?
