The 13th edition of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup is set to take place in 2025, with India and Sri Lanka hosting the games across five venues. As of today, there are a total of 12 editions completed, and only three teams have become the ICC Women’s World Cup winners. The first edition of the Women’s ODI WC happened in 1973, won by England. Australia won the last edition in 2022.

England – 1973 (Host – England)
England won the title in the inaugural women’s ODI WC edition in 1973. They won 5 out of 6 games in the tournament. With 20 points, they finished at No. 1 in the table and were adjudged the Women’s World Cup winners. The other participating teams in the tournament were Australia Women, International XI Women, New Zealand Women, Trinidad and Tobago Women, Jamaica Women, and Young England Women.

Australia – 1978 (Host – India)
Australia won its first-ever Women’s ODI WC title in 1978. They won on the basis of the point system. With 3 wins in 3 games, Australia finished at No. 1 in the table with 6 points. The second-best team in the tournament was England, which earned 4 points with 2 wins. India and New Zealand Women are the other two teams that have participated in the tournament.

Australia – 1982 (Host – New Zealand)
It was the first-ever WC edition where the final was played. Australia won the title by beating England in the final by 3 wickets. They chased down the target of 152 in 59 overs (60 overs per side game) with 3 wickets in hand. Lancaster Park, Christchurch hosted the final in 1982 final.

Australia – 1988 (Host – Australia)
Australia Women made three-in-three and became the first team to win the title three years in a row. They also became the first Women’s World Cup winners at home. No team had won the title at home before 1988. At the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, they defeated England by 8 wickets. AUS chased down a target of 128 in 44.5 overs (60-overs per side) with 8 wickets in hand.

England – 1993 (Host – England)
England won their second title in 1993. They won the final at Lord’s, London, against New Zealand (NZ) by 67 runs. After scoring 195 in the first inning, they bowled NZ out for just 128. Karen Smithies was the captain of the England team in that edition.

Australia – 1997 (Host – India)
Australia became the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup winners for the 4th time in 1997. They won the title by defeating New Zealand in the final by 5 wickets. Eden Garden, Kolkata, hosted the 1997 ODI WC final on December 29, and AUS chased down the target of 165 in 47.4 overs (50 overs per side) with 5 wickets remaining. Captain Belinda Clark scored 52 runs off 81 balls in a run chase.

New Zealand – 2000 (Host – New Zealand)
New Zealand finally got over the line in 2000. They played the final in 1993 and 1997, but were unable to win the title. In 2000, they won their first-ever WC title by beating Australia in a nail-biting final at Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln. NZ scored 184 in the first inning, and AUS managed to score 180 in a run chase. The Kiwis won the final by a small margin of 4 runs.

Australia – 2005 (Host – South Africa)
Australia Women got back to winning ways and demonstrated their dominance in 2005 once again. This time, South Africa hosted the tournament (their first time), and AUS won the final against India at SuperSport Park, Centurion. They won the game quite convincingly in the end by 98 runs. After scoring 215 in the first inning, they bundled out India for just 117.

England – 2009 (Host – Australia)
England won their 3rd ODI WC title in 2013 by defeating New Zealand in the final. North Sydney Oval hosted the final on March 22, 2009. ENG bowled NZ out for 166 in the first inning. Then, they chased down the target in 46.1 overs with 4 wickets in hand. Nicky Shaw became the Player of the Match for her 17 runs off 27 balls and 4/34 with the ball.

Australia – 2013 (Host – India)
Australia became the Women’s World Cup winners for the 6th time in 2013. India’s Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, hosted the final between Australia and the West Indies on February 17, 2013. Australia scored 259 in the first inning. Rachael Haynes and Jess Duffin scored half-centuries in the first inning. West Indies did not manage to have any big partnerships in a run chase. They were bowled out for just 145 and lost the game by 114 runs.

England became the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup winners for the 4th time in 2017. They played the final against India at Lord’s, London, on July 13, 2017. ENG W scored 228 in the first inning. IND W fought hard and came close to the target. But they fell just 9 runs short of the target. It was their second final that they lost.

Australia became the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup champions for the 7th time in 2022. They are the current ICC Women’s World Cup Champions. Hagley Oval, Christchurch, hosted the final between Australia Women and England Women on April 03, 2022. The Aussies scored the highest score in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup (ODI) final history. They scored 356/5, where Alyssa Healy scored 170 runs off just 138 balls. Rachael Haynes and Beth Mooney also scored half-centuries. In a run chase, Nat Sciver-Brunt was a lone warrior for England. She scored 148 runs off 121 balls. There was no support for her in the 2nd inning. ENG W managed to score 285 in the second inning and lost the game by 71 runs.

As of now, only three teams have managed to win the Women’s Cricket World Cup titles. Australia won seven, England won four, and New Zealand has one ODI WC title in women’s cricket. Australia has also played the most finals in the WC. They have won 7 titles and ended up as runners-up once (in 2000). England has played a total of seven finals.
