The India squad for WI test series 2025 has been announced by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) on Thursday (September 25, 2025). Nitish Kumar Reddy (pace bowling all-rounder) and Devdutt Padikkal are back in the India squad for WI test at home. The series consists of 2 tests, with the first test starting on October 02, 2025, at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Ravindra Jadeja becomes the vice-captain of the Indian test squad, which will take on the West Indies (WI) in a home series.
It will be the first time that Team India will play a home test series after R Ashwin’s retirement. Last time, when India played a home test series against New Zealand (NZ), they lost all three tests in the series. So they will look to make the early inroads in this home test season. They will miss the services of their star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant as he continues to recover from his injury. Today, we will see the India squad for WI test series 2025. We will also see WI’s squad, which has already been announced, and how they can challenge India at their home. So let’s begin.
India Squad for WI Test Series 2025 Announced, Jadeja in Leadership Group
The BCCI has announced Team India’s squad for the two-match home test series against West Indies, starting from October 02. Ravindra Jadeja will be Shubman Gill’s deputy in the Test team. A 15-member squad consists of 5 pure batters, 2 wicketkeeper batters, 4 all-rounders, and 4 pure bowlers. Dhruv Jurel and N Jagadeesan are the two wicketkeepers in the squad, as Pant is still recovering from his right foot fracture. Nitish Reddy is back in the squad and is the only seam bowling all-rounder in the squad.

Devdutt Padikkal Back in the Mix, Nair Dropped from the Test Squad
The left-hander from Kerala, Devdutt Padikkal, is back in the India squad for WI test series 2025. He was a part of the test team in Australia during the 2024-25 BGT (Border-Gavaskar Trophy). The batter played the first test of the series. Padikkal also played a test at home against England in early 2024. He was not a part of the recently concluded IND vs ENG 5-test series in England.
Padikkal also scored 150 against touring Australia A in Lucknow. Him coming back in the squad means Karun Nair has been dropped from the test squad. Nair has not had a great away series in England. He got the starts in a few innings, but could not convert those starts into a big score. The right-hander played 4 tests in England, and only managed to score one 50+ score, with the highest score of 57 in the last test of the series.
While talking about Nair, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said they were expecting a bit more from him. The selectors feel that Padikkal offers a bit more at this point. They wanted to give 15-20 tests to an individual, but it does not work like that, said Agarkar.

Sai Sudharsan to Bat at No. 3?
Sai Sudharsan is someone the selectors are looking at as a long-term investment at the top order. He started the England series at No. 3, before Nair took his place in the next game. He regained the No. 3 position for the last two tests. It looks like he will continue to play at No. 3. If he does well, it will be a great thing for India, as No. 3 is a very crucial position, filled by Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara for a long time.
Bumrah to Play Both Tests?
Ajit Agarkar has confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah will be available to play both the tests in the WI series. But, if required, India can rest him for a test, so that he will be fresh for the South Africa challenge. Bumrah did not play the fifth and last test on the England tour, and had enough rest to be selected in both tests of the WI series.
Three Spin Bowling All-rounders in the Squad
The India squad for WI test series 2025 consists of three proper spin bowling all-rounders in Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar. Sundar will be looked at as Ashwin’s successor. He has done well in whatever opportunities he has had till now. All three individuals can also bat long and can fill the batter’s position as well.
Kuldeep Yadav is the only wrist spinner in the test team. He is having a great time at the Asia Cup 2025. It will be interesting to see if he gets a chance in the playing XI or not. It seems unlikely, as Axar, Sundar, and Jadeja are enough to make the balance of the playing XI.
Only Three Genuine Pacers in the Team
The selectors went with only three pacers in the team. Considering the less seam-friendly conditions in India, Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh have been omitted from the test team. Along with Bumrah, the other two pacers in the team are Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.

Will the West Indies be Able to Challenge India in India?

If the pitches are spin-friendly, like a rank turner last time in Mumbai, who knows. Maybe WI won the toss and put enough runs on the board. Then India can see some trouble against the WI spinners, who only have to bowl in the right areas, and the pitch will do the rest.
In conclusion, WI can only challenge India when the pitches are bowling-friendly. We can expect some good pitches in the series where batters might enjoy their time. And as the game progresses, it will deteriorate further. A tough task ahead for WI in the India series.
