IND vs WI 2nd T20I Records

IND vs WI: Shai Hope, Sherfane Rutherford Make History as West Indies Chase 250 in Ranchi

India looked ready to take control of the IND vs WI T20I series after scoring a huge total in Ranchi. Sanju Samson played a brilliant innings, Ishan Kishan scored quick runs, and Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma finished the innings strongly. India scored 249/5, giving West Indies a target of 250 runs.

However, West Indies had other plans. Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford played outstanding innings and helped their team beat India by six wickets in the second T20I. West Indies reached 252/4 in just 18.3 overs. They completed the second-highest successful chase in men’s T20I history and levelled the five-match series at 1-1.

The match also produced several major records. Hope scored a century, and Shreyas Iyer’s winning streak as India’s captain came to an end. However, the result also raised serious questions about India’s bowling attack and the standards teams should expect from bowlers in modern T20 cricket.

1. Shreyas Iyer’s Winning Streak as India Captain Comes to an End

Shreyas Iyer had enjoyed a great run as India’s captain. His team won 10 matches in a row before West Indies defeated India in Ranchi. This winning streak ended in the second T20I, but it remains one of the longest winning runs by an Indian captain in men’s T20Is.

Rohit Sharma still holds the record with 14 consecutive wins between November 2019 and July 2022. He also led India to eight straight wins during the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Consecutive wins Indian captain Period
14 Rohit Sharma
November 2019–July 2022
10 Shreyas Iyer
July–October 2026
8 Rohit Sharma
T20 World Cup 2024

Iyer’s winning streak may have ended, but that does not take away from his earlier success. However, India’s defeat after scoring 249 runs shows that even a huge total cannot guarantee a win when the bowlers fail to stop the opposition.

2. West Indies Complete the Second-Highest Successful Chase in Men’s T20Is during the IND vs WI 2nd T20I

The 2nd IND vs WI 2nd T20I saw West Indies make history by chasing 250 runs against India. They finished at 252/4, making this the second-highest successful chase in men’s T20I history.

Only South Africa’s chase of 259 against West Indies at Centurion in 2023 ranks higher.

Successful chase Teams Venue and year
259 South Africa vs West Indies Centurion, 2023
252 West Indies vs India Ranchi, 2026
245 Australia vs New Zealand Auckland, 2018
244 Bulgaria vs Gibraltar Sofia, 2025
232 West Indies vs South Africa
Johannesburg, 2015
230 England vs South Africa Mumbai, 2016

Note: The table shows successful scores in run chases. West Indies finished their chase in Ranchi at 252/4. The target was 250.

The most surprising part was West Indies’ recovery after losing early wickets. They lost two wickets in the first over and reached 58/3 during the powerplay. India looked to have control of the match at that stage.

However, Hope and Rutherford changed the game with their fourth-wicket partnership of 120 runs. They attacked the Indian bowlers and brought West Indies back into the contest. Romario Shepherd then helped finish the chase. You can check the full scoreboard of this match HERE.

3. West Indies Join the Biggest Successful Chases in Men’s T20 Cricket

West Indies did not make history only in international cricket. Their successful chase also placed them among the highest successful chases in men’s T20 cricket across all competitions.

Successful chase Teams Venue and year
267 Washington Freedom vs MI New York Oakland, 2026
265 Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals Delhi, 2026

258 Brisbane Heat vs Perth Scorchers Brisbane, 2025
253 Middlesex vs Surrey The Oval, 2023
252 West Indies vs India Ranchi, 2026

West Indies showed that even a target of 250 runs does not have to be too difficult in modern T20 cricket. Their batters kept attacking and did not allow the early wickets to slow them down for long.

Their innings also showed the value of maintaining a high scoring rate. They kept finding runs and boundaries, which helped them stay close to the required rate throughout the chase.

4. IND vs WI Produces One of the Highest Match Totals in T20I History

India scored 249/5, while West Indies finished at 252/4. Together, the teams scored 501 runs in the IND vs WI 2nd T20I, making this the second-highest match total in men’s T20I history.

489 West Indies vs India Lauderhill, 2016

India’s innings featured several strong performances. Samson scored 82 runs, Kishan added 43, and Iyer scored 40. Tilak Varma also made an unbeaten 44 to help India finish with a huge total.

However, Roston Chase gave West Indies an important advantage with the ball. He took three wickets and conceded only 24 runs in four overs. His performance stood out in a match where most bowlers struggled to control the scoring.

5. Ranchi Records the Third-Highest Boundary Count in a T20I

The match also gave fans a huge number of fours and sixes. India and West Indies hit 79 boundaries combined, including 46 fours and 33 sixes.

Total boundaries Match Fours Sixes
81 South Africa vs West Indies, 2023 46 35
80 Gibraltar vs Bulgaria, 2025 39 41
79 India vs West Indies, 2026 46 33
73 India vs England, 2026 39 34
72 India vs New Zealand, 2026 36 36

India started the boundary-hitting show, but West Indies took it to another level during the chase. Hope hit nine sixes, while Rutherford cleared the boundary seven times.

The number of boundaries was impressive, but West Indies also showed great control after losing early wickets. They kept attacking and did not give India enough time to build pressure.

6. Shai Hope Records the Joint-Fastest T20I Century Against India

Hope’s unbeaten 102 off 45 balls was one of the biggest highlights of the match. He reached his century in just 45 balls, matching Jacob Bethell’s record for the fastest T20I century against India.

45 Shai Hope India Ranchi, 2026
45 Jacob Bethell India
Mumbai, T20 World Cup 2026
48 Evin Lewis India Lauderhill, 2016

Hope combined powerful hitting with smart batting. He knew when to attack and when to keep the scoreboard moving. He also made sure that the required run rate did not get out of control.

His century was not just a short period of aggressive batting. It helped West Indies recover after they lost two wickets in the opening over. Hope took responsibility and guided his team towards a historic win.

7. Shai Hope Joins Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis in West Indies’ T20I Century Club

Hope’s second T20I century puts him alongside Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis among West Indies batters with two centuries in the format.

Hope’s achievement is important because people often know him for his classical batting style. He built his reputation through his technique and ability to play long innings, especially in the longer formats.

However, he has also improved his attacking game. He can now hit sixes regularly, score quickly, and guide his team through difficult run chases.

His performance in Ranchi showed that he can do more than build an innings slowly. He can also dominate an attack when his team needs quick runs.

India must now find out why such big totals are not enough to secure wins. The problem is not that 249 runs is a poor score. Instead, the bowlers failed to defend a total that should have put West Indies under serious pressure.

West Indies have shown that they can handle big run chases. India cannot depend only on their batters to win matches. The bowlers must also find ways to stop the opposition, especially when the team has already scored more than 200 runs.

For India, this defeat shows that strong batting alone cannot guarantee victory. For West Indies, it shows what their batting line-up can achieve when Hope, Rutherford and the other attacking players perform together.

The big question after this IND vs WI thriller is simple: Are we entering an era where even 250 runs no longer feels safe? Or do teams need to find better ways to defend huge totals?
