A familiar name from Indian cricket has started a new chapter with the Chennai Super Kings. The franchise has chosen a former Indian fast bowler after a long coaching era came to an end.
For CSK, this is not just a change in the coaching staff. The team went through a tough period on the field, and this move could also bring a new way of building the squad.
Zaheer Khan Replaces Stephen Fleming at CSK
The Chennai Super Kings have appointed Zaheer Khan as their new head coach for IPL 2027. He replaces Stephen Fleming, who had been with CSK since 2008. Fleming first joined the team as a player and later became the head coach. He helped CSK win five IPL titles.
Fleming stepped down in July 2026 after CSK finished eighth. The team won six games and lost eight.
CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan said the franchise discussed Zaheer’s name with its cricket leadership. This included MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson, along with the owners.
“We wanted to get the views of the cricket management, including MS Dhoni, Ruturaj [Gaikwad] and Sanju [Samson],” Viswanathan told ESPNcricinfo. “There were a lot of discussions with the owners also.”
Zaheer did not have a formal interview. He accepted the role quickly. His first contract is for one year. He can also choose his own coaching staff.
This could be one of the most important parts of this CSK latest update. The franchise has not yet made the future of some members of last season’s coaching staff clear.

From India Bowling Consultant to CSK Head Coach

Zaheer’s coaching career has grown step by step since he retired from playing.
In 2017, India first announced Zaheer as its bowling coach. The role later changed to bowling consultant. He worked with the team on a tour-to-tour basis overseas under Ravi Shastri.
Zaheer then joined Mumbai Indians. In 2018, he became the director of cricket operations. In 2022, MI promoted him to Global Head of Cricket Development.
In that role, Zaheer worked on player development, talent identification and building the cricket system across the MI network.
He later joined Lucknow Super Giants as their mentor in August 2024. He worked on team plans, scouting and player development. He stayed with LSG until September 2025.
Now, CSK new head coach Zaheer Khan will take on the biggest coaching role of his career.
Zaheer Khan’s Playing Experience Could Help CSK’s Bowlers
Zaheer could have a big role in helping CSK’s bowlers.
During his international career, Zaheer played 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is for India. He took 311, 282 and 17 wickets in these formats. Overall, he took 610 international wickets.
He was also one of India’s main players during the 2011 ODI World Cup. He took 21 wickets and finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
Zaheer also has strong IPL experience. He played 100 IPL matches and took 102 wickets, with an economy rate of around 7.59. He played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils.
This experience could help CSK, as the team has started giving more chances to young players.
Zaheer has spent many years working with fast bowlers. He also knows how teams find young talent and help players improve. His previous work in player development could help him beyond match-day tactics.

Why Zaheer Could Be Important for CSK’s Young Core
The timing of this appointment is important.
CSK usually depended on experienced players. But the franchise started changing its approach after finishing at the bottom in 2025.
Young players such as Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis and Kartik Sharma joined the setup. However, CSK still struggled for results.
Zaheer’s experience in player development could match this new direction.
At Mumbai Indians, his Global Head of Cricket Development role focused on finding and developing talent. At LSG, he also worked on the team’s wider structure as a mentor.
Zaheer also worked with head coach Mahela Jayawardene at Mumbai Indians during the team’s title-winning seasons in 2019 and 2020.
That experience could help Zaheer understand how to build a successful team and create a strong coaching setup.
Zaheer’s Own Words on Joining Chennai Super Kings
Zaheer has also faced CSK many times during his playing career.
He played in the IPL finals in 2010 and 2011. His teams lost both finals to Chennai.
Speaking after his appointment, Zaheer said: “It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL,” Zaheer said in a CSK press release.
“As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk makes it even more special. I can’t wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history,” he continued.
This move also gives Zaheer his first chance to work as a head coach in the IPL.

A New Era Begins at CSK
The Stephen Fleming era gave CSK a lot of stability. Now, the franchise faces a new challenge.
CSK needs to mix its experience-based approach with a younger group of players who can perform in the coming seasons.
Zaheer brings a lot of experience. He has 610 international wickets, 102 IPL wickets, World Cup-winning experience, IPL management experience, talent-development knowledge and previous mentoring work.
His role will focus only on the IPL. CSK’s teams in other leagues have separate coaching setups.
For IPL 2027, the biggest question may not only be whether Zaheer can replace Fleming. It will also be about how he uses his experience to develop CSK’s young players and build his coaching team.
