England’s preparations for the second Test against Pakistan have faced another off-field issue. Fast bowler Brydon Carse will not play in the Lord’s Test after a video showed him in handcuffs outside a venue in Derby. The incident happened on Saturday night, after Carse played for Durham in the County Championship.
The timing has drawn attention. England had just beaten Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs at Headingley. They were then preparing for the England vs Pakistan 2nd Test 2026. Now, one of their fast bowlers is unavailable while the independent Cricket Regulator investigates.
But one important point must be clear: Carse has not been found guilty of an offence.
What happened to Brydon Carse in Derby?
Carse did not play in England’s first Test against Pakistan. England had left him out of the Headingley team, so they allowed him to play for Durham.
Durham beat Derbyshire on Saturday. Ben Stokes took five wickets in the match. After the win, some Durham players went out to celebrate.
Then the video appeared.
On Sunday, a video started spreading online. It showed Brydon Carse with police officers outside a venue in Derby. Police had put him in handcuffs, and reports said the venue was Molly Malone’s Irish Tavern.

However, the police statement gives more context.
Derbyshire Constabulary gave a statement to Cricinfo. Police did not name Carse and said:
“A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday night (22 August).”
Police then explained that the incident ended soon after:
“However, the man was de-arrested shortly afterwards having agreed to leave the area.”
Carse, who is 31, is understood to be the man mentioned in the statement.
So, the video does not tell the whole story. Police briefly detained Carse on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly, but they released him shortly afterwards.
At this stage, there is no finding that Carse committed a criminal offence.
Why did England remove Carse from the squad?
This is where the situation becomes more serious.
As per the Cricinfo report, the ECB referred the matter to the independent Cricket Regulator. The regulator has confirmed that it will investigate what happened on Saturday night.
The ECB then made its decision.
The board explained why Carse would not play at Lord’s:
“Brydon Carse will no longer be available for selection for the second men’s Rothesay Test match while this investigation is ongoing and the full facts are obtained.”
This makes the situation clear. England are not announcing a final punishment for Carse. Instead, they have removed him from the squad while the investigation looks into what happened.
The ECB also confirmed who would replace him: “Brydon will be replaced in the squad for this match by Sonny Baker.”
Hampshire’s Sonny Baker will now join England’s squad for the second Test. There is one more important detail. Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts also appeared in the video. However, there is no suggestion that either player committed an offence.
The Brydon Carse nightclub incident comes at a difficult time
The incident would be easier for England to deal with if it was a one-off. But it comes after other similar issues.
The Carse incident happened less than two weeks after new England Test captain Joe Root relaxed the team’s midnight curfew. The idea was simple: trust the players.
England wanted to give players more freedom away from cricket and expected them to act responsibly. Now, soon after that change, another England player has become part of an off-field investigation after a night out.
This does not mean Root made the wrong decision. However, it could make that decision harder to defend if more incidents happen.
England’s off-field problems did not start with Carse
The latest incident has also started a bigger discussion about England cricket controversy. England have dealt with several off-field incidents involving players over the past year.
Earlier this summer, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were suspended while an investigation looked into celebrations after England’s first Test against New Zealand.
The two players were later cleared of any involvement in violent conduct at a nightclub. However, they received written warnings for breaking specific contractual rules. Stokes has also faced a much more serious off-field incident in the past.
In 2017, footage showed an incident outside a nightclub in Bristol. Stokes later faced criminal proceedings. In 2018, a court acquitted him of affray. Then there was Harry Brook.
The England batter received a £30,000 fine and came close to losing the white-ball captaincy after an incident involving a nightclub bouncer in Wellington last year.
England’s Ashes campaign also faced questions about drinking. These reports became especially noticeable during the team’s break in Noosa. The link between English cricket and alcohol is also not new.
After England won the 2013 Ashes, players took part in famous celebrations at The Oval. Reports said that some players even urinated on the pitch. So, the current debate is not completely new. The main difference is the much greater attention professional athletes now receive. England has also faced several incidents in a fairly short period.
Even Stokes has spoken about cricket’s drinking culture
Another important part of this discussion is this. Ben Stokes recently spoke about cricket’s long connection with alcohol. He explained how that relationship still exists today:
“We are in 2026 now, where the game has gone more professional over the years, and one thing that has stayed within cricket is its relationship with alcohol – from club cricket it works its way up.”
This quote matters because the issue is bigger than one England player. Alcohol has been part of cricket culture for many years, especially in English cricket. Players have often celebrated wins in dressing rooms, clubhouses and after matches with drinks.
However, international cricket has become more professional, more commercial and more visible. An incident that may once have stayed private can now become a viral video within a few hours. That is exactly what happened with Carse.
Carse’s previous disciplinary issue adds another layer
There is also some history involving the England fast bowler. In 2024, Carse served a ban for historic betting offences. He placed 303 bets on cricket matches between 2017 and 2019. Carse did not play in any of those matches. However, England players cannot bet on cricket under the sport’s integrity rules.
He was later banned from cricket for three months. That case is not connected to the current Derby incident, and it would be wrong to say that the two incidents are related. However, it means Carse has already gone through one disciplinary process during his career. Now, he is facing another investigation.
So, what happens to Brydon Carse now?
For now, the answer is simple: he will not play at Lord’s. The Cricket Regulator will investigate what happened in Derby. The ECB has also said that Carse will remain unavailable for the second Test until the investigation is complete and the facts are clear.
England will have Sonny Baker as his replacement. The timing is bad for Carse, but it could be even more important for England. A team can manage without one fast bowler.
What is harder to manage is the repeated pattern of night out → controversy → investigation → disciplinary questions.
England have already faced this pattern several times.
The Carse incident could still turn out to be a minor matter. Police said they released him shortly after detaining him, and the regulator has not yet decided whether he broke any cricket rules.
That is why the investigation is important.
Until the facts are clear, the handcuff footage shows only one part of the story.
For England, the bigger question is no longer just what happened to Brydon Carse in Derby.
The bigger question is whether the team’s decision to trust experienced players to behave responsibly can continue after another off-field controversy.
At Lord’s, England will try to take a 2-0 lead against Pakistan.
Away from the cricket field, however, another investigation is already underway.
