The much-awaited BCCI Review Meeting took place at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday, September 3. The meeting focused on India’s recent results, player injuries, workload, and India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
BCCI president Mithun Manhas, secretary Devajit Saikia, head coach Gautam Gambhir, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, and Centre of Excellence (COE) head VVS Laxman attended the meeting. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar did not attend.
The meeting did not bring any big immediate changes. However, the BCCI discussed several areas where Indian cricket needs to improve. Player workload, overseas preparation, and injury management were among the main topics.
What happened in the BCCI Review Meeting?
Here are all the major decisions and talking points after the BCCI Review Meeting.
1. India’s recent defeats were reviewed
The BCCI reviewed India’s recent performances in Ireland, England and Sri Lanka. India lost the T20I series against Ireland 0-2, the T20I series against England 1-4 and the ODI series in England 1-2.
The recent Test series against Sri Lanka was also discussed. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board wanted to understand the reasons behind these results and find ways to improve.
The BCCI has already prepared a roadmap for the 2027 World Cup. The meeting focused on long-term improvement and preparing India for the next stage of international cricket.
2. Player injuries became a major concern
Player injuries were one of the main topics at the meeting. Saikia said Indian players are playing too many matches. He pointed to the England ODI series, where three or four players from the 15-member squad suffered injuries.
These players had already spent around two months playing in the IPL. The BCCI now wants better workload management. Several key players have also faced fitness problems recently.
Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana have all had fitness issues. The board wants to reduce injuries caused by a heavy schedule.

3. BCCI wants a better Future Tours Programme
One of the main plans from the meeting was to improve the Future Tours Programme (FTP). The BCCI wants players to get more rest between series and enough time to recover between tournaments.
The board also wants better preparation for overseas tours. For SENA countries — South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia — players should get enough time to adjust to the conditions.
India could also play warm-up or friendly matches before major overseas series. Saikia said the FTP team has been asked to consider these changes. India’s busy schedule of seven Tests, 14 ODIs and 16 T20Is makes workload management very important.
4. BCCI reviewed the injury-return process
The meeting also discussed how injured players should return to international cricket. Players can complete rehabilitation with their own physiotherapists or at the Centre of Excellence.
Before returning to the Indian team, they must complete the required fitness and rehabilitation process. Saikia said the BCCI reviewed these rules again during the meeting.
The board also took feedback from Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and Gautam Gambhir. The main aim is to ensure players return only when they are fully ready and reduce the risk of another injury.
5. COE and medical system were discussed
The Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru was also discussed during the meeting. There have been questions about India’s injury problems and how injured players return to cricket. Some commentators also questioned the communication between the COE, selectors and team management.
However, these were not official BCCI findings. Saikia rejected the idea of any major coordination problem and said the BCCI, COE and team management were working well together. He also confirmed that the Head of Sports Science and Medicine position remains vacant.
The BCCI is searching for a highly qualified person. Saikia said around 16 people are handling fitness and rehabilitation work.
6. Rohit Sharma’s ODI future is still open
Rohit Sharma was also a major topic around the meeting. Fresh speculation has emerged about his ODI future and his chances of playing in the 2027 World Cup. Saikia rejected the retirement rumours and pointed to Rohit’s recent form, including his 138-run knock at Lord’s.
However, this does not mean Rohit Sharma has a guaranteed place in the 2027 World Cup squad. The selectors and team management will make that decision. His form, fitness, and performances in the coming matches will also play an important role.
So, the main point is simple: BCCI has not officially closed Rohit Sharma’s ODI career.

7. Ajit Agarkar did not attend the meeting
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar was invited to the meeting but could not attend. Saikia said the meeting was called at short notice. Agarkar was out of station because of earlier commitments.
He also could not join the meeting online because of poor internet connectivity. Saikia made it clear that the meeting did not discuss changing the selection committee or Agarkar’s future.
His current tenure is expected to end in October, but the BCCI has not decided on an extension. Some people criticised his absence, but this was not an official BCCI decision.
8. No Director of Cricket will be appointed
Another major rumour was also discussed. There were reports that the BCCI could appoint a Director of Cricket. However, Saikia rejected the idea and said there was no discussion about such an appointment. Therefore, the BCCI has currently made no decision to appoint a Director of Cricket.
VVS Laxman attended the meeting as the head of the Centre of Excellence. His presence does not mean that the BCCI plans to make him the Director of Cricket.
9. 2027 World Cup remains the main target
The BCCI also discussed India’s long-term plans. The 2027 ODI World Cup remains a major target for the team. The board wants to use the next year to build a strong squad for the tournament.
The plan includes better player availability, improved preparation for overseas conditions, and better workload management. The BCCI wants to solve problems across different areas instead of focusing on one bad series. The main aim is to build a stronger, fitter and better-prepared Indian team for the 2027 World Cup.
10. Asian Games concerns were also discussed
The Asian Games were also an issue around the meeting.
There had been concerns about accommodation and facilities for the Indian cricket teams in Japan.
Saikia said the BCCI does not expect major problems.
He also said the board will step in if needed to make sure the players and support staff get proper facilities.
VVS Laxman will lead the men’s cricket team at the Asian Games, while Shreyas Iyer will captain the side.
