New update on MS Dhoni stake in CSK

CSK Shut Down MS Dhoni Stake Reports, But There’s a Twist

Chennai Super Kings have now cleared the air about the reports claiming MS Dhoni wanted to buy a sizeable stake in the IPL franchise.

A senior CSK official said Dhoni never approached the franchise to buy more shares. The official also said that Dhoni and the CSK management never discussed the matter.

“MS has never asked us about it. We never discussed the matter. We also don’t have any information about him having discussed this with Mr N Srinivasan either,” the senior CSK functionary said.

This statement goes against the reports that claimed Dhoni wanted to increase his ownership in CSK. It also shows that fans should not consider the reported talks over a bigger stake as a confirmed fact.

What did the earlier reports claim about Dhoni’s CSK stake?

Before CSK gave its clarification, several reports claimed that Dhoni wanted to buy a major part of the franchise.

One report said that the former India captain wanted a 25% stake in CSK. Other reports later mentioned 20%. Some reports also claimed that the franchise was ready to offer him a much smaller share.

However, these numbers came from reports about the alleged talks. CSK has now said that Dhoni never had such a discussion with the franchise.

That makes CSK’s latest statement the biggest update in the story.

Dhoni has had a long and successful relationship with CSK. He has also played a huge role in the franchise’s success over the years. But CSK says that he never asked for a major ownership stake.

There is one part of the ownership story that is true, though.

Dhoni does own shares in CSK

CSK has denied that Dhoni asked to buy a bigger stake. However, the former captain already owns shares in the company.

Dhoni reportedly bought more than one lakh shares when they were available for purchase.

This does not mean that Dhoni owns a major part of the franchise. CSK is an unlisted company, so people cannot buy and sell its shares on the stock market. However, shareholders can transfer the shares through private or off-market deals.

More than 30 crore outstanding shares are reportedly held by the public. This makes up close to 40% of CSK’s total share capital. The Srinivasan family holds a controlling stake of more than 55%.

Because of this, Dhoni’s one lakh-plus shares make up only a very small part of the total ownership.

The key point is simple: Dhoni owns CSK shares, but CSK has denied that he wanted to buy a major stake in the franchise.

Dhoni’s existing CSK shares still carry value

Dhoni’s small shareholding becomes more interesting because IPL franchise values have increased sharply in recent years.

An IPL franchise was recently sold for more than Rs 16,600 crore. The deal showed how much team values have grown since the league’s early days.

Based on current IPL franchise valuations, Dhoni’s existing shares could be worth around Rs 2.6-3 crore. That is still a small amount compared with Dhoni’s estimated net worth of around Rs 1,200 crore.

However, IPL franchise values continue to grow.

Houlihan Lokley’s 2026 IPL Brand Valuation Study valued the league’s business enterprise at $20.6 billion. The number increased by 11.4% from the previous year. The study also placed the IPL’s standalone brand value at $4.3 billion.

Recent franchise deals have also shown strong interest from investors. Royal Challengers Bengaluru was acquired for $1.78 billion. Rajasthan Royals also changed hands at a reported valuation of $1.65 billion.

These numbers show why owning even a small part of an IPL franchise can have significant financial value.

CSK remains one of the IPL’s biggest brands

Despite its recent problems on the field, Chennai Super Kings remains one of the most valuable teams in the IPL.

Houlihan Lokley’s 2026 study ranked CSK fourth among IPL franchises. It gave the team a brand value of $244 million. The value increased by 3.8% compared with 2025.

However, the study also pointed to CSK’s recent results and Dhoni’s smaller role.

CSK missed the playoffs for the third straight season. Dhoni also did not play a single game last season after stepping down as captain.

Even with his reduced playing role, Dhoni remains an important figure for the franchise.

Dhoni still has an important role at CSK

The reports about Dhoni’s ownership came at a time when he still has an important role in CSK’s plans for the future.

The franchise is looking for a new head coach after it ended its long association with Stephen Fleming. Fleming had served as CSK’s head coach since 2009.

CSK management has reportedly given Dhoni an important role in finding Fleming’s replacement. The former captain has reportedly backed an Indian-led coaching setup. Former India batter Hemang Badani has also emerged as one of the names being considered.

However, CSK’s owners and management will make the final decision.

Dhoni is expected to return around September 22. After that, the franchise could hold discussions about the new coach, transfers, and trades.

So, the recent reports may have made it look like Dhoni wanted to become a much bigger owner of CSK. But the franchise has now rejected that claim.

Dhoni does own shares in CSK. But according to the franchise, he never asked to buy the sizeable stake that earlier reports had suggested.

That difference is important. Dhoni may have a smaller ownership interest in CSK, but the franchise says he never tried to buy the much larger stake mentioned in earlier reports.

At the same time, Dhoni remains an important part of CSK’s plans as the franchise prepares for the next phase after his playing career.
