The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 has a new home. The International Cricket Council has confirmed that India will host the first edition of the women’s tournament from February 14 to 28, 2027.
The tournament was originally supposed to take place in Sri Lanka. However, the ICC moved the event after concerns about the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and government involvement in the board’s work.
Cricbuzz had earlier reported that the Women’s Champions Trophy would move out of Sri Lanka because of government interference. The ICC has now officially confirmed India as the new host.
India Gets Hosting Rights for Women’s Champions Trophy
The tournament will take place at two venues in India. The Cricket Club of India in Mumbai, also known as Brabourne Stadium, and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium in Vadodara will host the matches.
The ICC looked at three countries as possible replacement hosts: Bangladesh, South Africa and India. After checking the options, the ICC Board approved India as the host on September 1.
This will put India in the spotlight for the first-ever Women’s Champions Trophy. It will also bring another big women’s cricket event to the country.
Six teams will play in the tournament: India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
All six teams will play against each other in the league stage. The tournament will then reach its final on February 28.
Why Was the Tournament Moved From Sri Lanka?
The change is linked to the situation at Sri Lanka Cricket.
A government-appointed Transformation Committee currently runs SLC. The committee is working on reforms. These reforms include changes to the board’s rules and its governance system.
However, the ICC does not allow a politically appointed interim group to run a national cricket board.
Sri Lanka has faced a similar problem before. The country lost the hosting rights for the 2024 U19 World Cup. South Africa later hosted the tournament.
Even after losing the event, the ICC said Sri Lanka Cricket is still working on the required reforms. These reforms follow the recommendations made at the ICC Annual Conference in July.
So, the decision to move the Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 is not only about choosing another country to host the matches. It also shows how seriously the ICC takes the governance of cricket boards.

Jay Shah Highlights Importance of New Women’s Tournament
The inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy will add another major ICC event to the women’s cricket calendar.
ICC chairman Jay Shah believes the new tournament can help women’s cricket grow. He also believes it can create more competition between the top teams.
Shah spoke about the importance of the new event and how it can help teams compete at the highest level:
“The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 marks an exciting new chapter for women’s cricket.”
“As the inaugural edition of the tournament, it will bring together the best teams in the world in an intense, high-quality competition, while creating even greater incentive for teams to continue rising through the rankings and competing for a place on the global stage.”
His comments show that the tournament will reward teams that perform well and stay high in the international rankings.
Only six teams will take part in the tournament. Because of this, earning a place in the competition will be important for every team.
Jay Shah also spoke about the chance to have a major women’s cricket event every year:
“With a marquee ICC women’s event now taking place every year, we have a significant opportunity to build greater momentum, provide more consistency and create a stronger rhythm for the women’s game, its players and its fans around the world.”
A regular calendar can help women’s cricket grow further. It can also give players and teams more chances to play important international matches.

Women’s Cricket Continues to Expand
The addition of the Women’s Champions Trophy shows how much women’s cricket has grown in recent years.
Women’s cricket already has major events such as the Women’s ODI World Cup, Women’s T20 World Cup and Women’s Asia Cup. The Champions Trophy will now add another major ICC tournament to this list.
Women’s cricket is also growing outside international tournaments.
T20 leagues have become an important part of the sport. Competitions such as the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), Women’s Premier League (WPL) and The Hundred Women’s competition give players more chances to play high-level cricket.
Women’s Test cricket has also received more attention in recent years. Teams are playing more Test matches than before. This gives players more chances to play the longest format of the game.
All these changes show that women’s cricket now has more than just a few big tournaments. The sport is building a stronger system that includes international cricket, domestic leagues, franchise tournaments and Test matches.

What the 2027 Champions Trophy Could Mean
Hosting the first Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 will give India another chance to promote women’s cricket in front of home fans.
The six teams will get another chance to compete at a high level. Their rankings, consistency and performances will also become more important as teams look to qualify for major events.
The move from Sri Lanka also shows that good governance is as important as having the right facilities to host a tournament.
Sri Lanka will continue its reform process. At the same time, India will now have the responsibility of hosting a successful first edition of the tournament.
The February 14–28 window will therefore mean more than the start of a new tournament. It will also mark another step toward creating a bigger and more regular calendar for women’s cricket.
