For many years, South Africa has entered ICC tournaments with a team strong enough to challenge the best sides in the world. However, the Proteas have suffered several painful defeats in big matches. Their World Cup semifinal loss in 1992, the dramatic finish in 1999, and the heartbreaking exit in 2015 all added to the famous SA chokers tag. Former captain Faf du Plessis believes this tag slowly became another problem for the team.
Speaking on a podcast with Prakhar Gupta, Faf explained why people should not blame every South African World Cup defeat on pressure. He accepted that teams sometimes lose matches from winning positions. However, he believes that talking about these defeats again and again can make the problem much bigger.
Faf du Plessis Explains How the SA Chokers Tag Grew
Faf du Plessis believes South Africa’s repeated World Cup defeats made the chokers tag stronger over time. Instead of looking at each defeat separately, people started connecting every loss to the same label.
He explained on a podcast, “So for South Africa, it would just be a case of that in some occasions, teams outplayed us on the day, which happens in every game of sport we’ve ever played. And on some days, we threw the match away from a winning position. And that also happens in normal sport. Like, that’s normal sport.”
Faf’s point is simple. Not every South African defeat has the same reason. Sometimes, the opposition plays better and wins. At other times, South Africa fail to finish a match despite being in a strong position. Both situations happen in sports, and the Proteas are not the only team to face them.
However, Faf du Plessisbelieves that people made these defeats a much bigger issue by discussing them repeatedly. Over time, the chokers tag became more than just a way to describe a few bad results.
“So, then it becomes you create this this small thing and it just grows legs and it grows arms and it grows a brain and it becomes this this superpower that always been talked about.”
Faf also believes that other teams could use this reputation against South Africa. The Proteas must therefore do more than win one big match. They must also move past a label that has followed them for years.

From the 1992 Rain Rule to the 1999 World Cup Heartbreak
South Africa suffered several painful defeats in major ICC tournaments. However, not all these losses came because the team failed to handle pressure.
During the 1992 Cricket World Cup semifinal against England, South Africa needed 22 runs from 13 balls when rain stopped play. The rain rule at that time changed their target to 22 runs from just one ball. This made it impossible for South Africa to win and ended their hopes of reaching the final. The controversial decision later became one of the reasons cricket changed how it adjusted targets after rain.
The 1999 World Cup semifinal against Australia brought another painful result. The match at Edgbaston ended in a tie, but Australia reached the final. South Africa had come close to winning before a dramatic final over ended their campaign.
These moments built the chokers tag, which critics continued to use whenever South Africa lost an important match. The team also suffered other major setbacks, including their exit from the 2003 World Cup after a rain-affected chase, their 2015 semifinal loss to New Zealand, and their 2023 semifinal defeat to Australia.
Faf du Plessis was part of the 2015 World Cup team, making that defeat especially painful for him.
South Africa came close to reaching the 2015 World Cup final before New Zealand beat them in the semifinal. Grant Elliott hit the winning six to end South Africa’s campaign. Faf remembered how rain affected the match and how difficult the defeat was for the players.
He recalled the emotional scenes in the dressing room after the loss. He had rarely seen so many players cry after a match. The defeat hurt even more because the team believed it had a real chance of winning the World Cup.
The 2024 T20 World Cup Final Renewed the Debate
South Africa suffered another heartbreaking defeat against India in the 2024 T20 World Cup final. The Proteas were chasing 177 runs and looked close to victory at 151/4. However, they lost control of the match and finished seven runs short. Heinrich Klaasen’s dismissal played a major role in India’s comeback.
Faf du Plessis was not part of that South African team, but he spoke about David Miller’s dismissal. Suryakumar Yadav took a stunning catch near the boundary to dismiss Miller.
Faf questioned the position of the boundary rope after the match. He suggested that even a small change in its position could have turned Miller’s shot into a six. His main point was that tiny details can decide the biggest matches.
For South Africa, the defeat became another painful near-miss and brought the chokers tag back into the discussion. However, the team’s later success in the World Test Championship gave people a new reason to look at South African cricket differently.

Can the World Test Championship Victory Change South Africa’s Mindset?
In June 2025, South Africa defeated Australia by five wickets at Lord’s to win the World Test Championship final under captain Temba Bavuma. It was South Africa’s first major ICC cricket title since the 1998 Champions Trophy. The win ended a 27-year wait for another major global trophy.
The victory meant much more than winning a trophy. South Africa had spent years facing questions about their record in major finals. This time, they handled the pressure and won the title. The result showed that the old reputation did not have to define the team forever.
Faf believes this victory can help South Africa move past the mental pressure linked to their past defeats. He compared their situation with New Zealand’s All Blacks rugby team. In his view, winning a major tournament can help a team build confidence and achieve more success.
Talking about South Africa’s breakthrough, he said, “So we knew within South Africa that once that monkey gets off it off your back, the ceiling would crack open and and we would actually then become a team that um wins multiple things.”
The World Test Championship title does not erase South Africa’s past World Cup defeats. However, it proves that the team can win a major final despite the pressure and expectations.
Faf du Plessis Backs South Africa Ahead of the 2027 World Cup
South Africa will co-host the 2027 ODI World Cup with Zimbabwe and Namibia. Faf is hopeful about the Proteas’ chances in the tournament. He believes the team’s current form, experience, and home advantage could help them achieve something special.
He said, “So, yeah, once that once that happens and I believe I have got a strong feeling on next year, the 50 of a World Cup in South Africa. Almost like the stars aligning. Uh the team is playing really well. We’ll be a very experienced team.”
Faf also believes that South Africa winning their first ODI World Cup on home soil would make the moment even more special. The country has waited for years to see its team lift a major World Cup trophy.
“But also the story line around how cool would that be if South Africa wins their first tournament?” he added.
South Africa will once again face pressure when the 2027 World Cup begins. However, Faf believes the team should focus on the future instead of allowing past defeats to control its thinking. The 2025 World Test Championship victory has already challenged the old reputation, and the 2027 World Cup offers another chance to move beyond it.
The Proteas cannot change what happened in previous tournaments. But they can decide how they respond to those defeats. If South Africa win the 2027 ODI World Cup at home, they could finally weaken the chokers tag that has followed the team for decades.
