MI started discussing their future plans after their season review in the UK. The IPL 2027 season is still some time away, but the franchise is already thinking about a possible change in leadership.
At the moment, Tilak Varma appears to have a slight advantage over Jasprit Bumrah in the race to become the next Mumbai Indians captain.
The situation is also interesting because Hardik Pandya may not remain the captain even if he stays with the franchise.
Hardik Pandya’s Situation at Mumbai Indians
Hardik Pandya’s future at Mumbai Indians is one of the biggest questions for the franchise.
MI have two different decisions to make. First, they need to decide if Hardik will stay as a player. Second, they need to decide if he will remain the captain.
According to TOI Sports reporter Sahil Malhotra, the current signs suggest that even if Hardik stays, he may not captain Mumbai Indians in the future.
His captaincy record also shows a big difference between his two IPL spells.
Hardik led Gujarat Titans in 31 matches during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The team won 22 of those games and lost only nine. He had a strong 70.97% win percentage as captain.
His record with MI has been very different. From 2024 to 2026, Hardik led Mumbai in 39 matches. MI won 15 games and lost 24. His win percentage during this period was just 38.46%.
This big difference could be one reason why MI are thinking about a new captain.
However, MI may not simply let Hardik leave. If another franchise wants him, Mumbai Indians could ask for a strong trade package because Hardik remains one of the most valuable all-rounders in T20 cricket.
For now, three possibilities remain. Hardik could stay as a player without the captaincy. MI could trade him to another team. Or the franchise could keep him and use him as an important all-rounder under a new captain.
Tilak Varma vs Jasprit Bumrah: Who Could Be the Next Captain?
The two biggest names in the MI captaincy race are Tilak Varma and Jasprit Bumrah.
Bumrah has more experience and looks like a natural option. He is one of the world’s best fast bowlers and has been with MI for many years. He has also led India in the past.
However, some people within the franchise are still not fully convinced about giving Bumrah the captaincy on a long-term basis.
That could help Tilak Varma.
Tilak is part of the younger generation at Mumbai Indians. He could become one of the main faces of the franchise in the coming years.
MI are not only thinking about the 2027 season. They also want to build a team for the future. Giving the captaincy to a young player like Tilak could therefore make sense.

Rohit Sharma’s Role Remains Important
A possible captaincy change does not mean Rohit Sharma will leave Mumbai Indians.
His position with the franchise appears safe.
Rohit is expected to continue with MI for as long as he wants to play. His opinion could also be important when the franchise decides on its next captain.
The former India captain remains part of the team’s senior group. His experience could help MI make this important decision.
So, even if Rohit does not become captain again, he could still play an important role in the team.
What About Suryakumar Yadav?
There has also been a lot of talk about Suryakumar Yadav possibly leaving Mumbai Indians.
However, MI do not seem ready to make a quick decision.
The franchise still rates Suryakumar very highly. He remains an important T20 batter, and MI are unlikely to make a major decision only because of his recent performances.
Because of this, Suryakumar Yadav could stay with Mumbai Indians for the next season.
His future, just like Hardik’s, will be worth watching during the trade and auction period.

Mahela Jayawardene Set to Continue
MI have also made an important decision about their coaching staff.
Mahela Jayawardene is expected to continue as Mumbai Indians’ head coach next season.
Jayawardene returned to the franchise and helped MI reach the playoffs in 2025. However, the team had a poor 2026 season and finished ninth.
Despite that result, the MI management does not appear ready to make major changes.
The current IPL cycle will end with the 2027 season. MI seems more interested in making careful changes instead of completely changing their leadership team.
