India vs Sri Lanka Galle Test REVIEW: India did exactly what they needed to do in Galle. They beat Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test and took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
India built the win with strong batting in the first innings. Their bowlers then stayed disciplined when Sri Lanka started to fight back. Devdutt Padikkal was the main star, while Manav Suthar delivered the key spell. India also finished the match before rain could cause more problems.
The win also helped India in the World Test Championship 2025-27. This India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test review looks at the key moments that helped India secure a 165-run victory in Galle.
India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Review: Padikkal’s 167 Sets Up India’s Dominance
India laid the base for their win in the first innings. They scored 462 runs, with Devdutt Padikkal playing the best innings of the match.
Padikkal scored 167 runs. His innings gave India full control of the match, even though Sri Lanka’s spinners were expected to be dangerous. He played with patience and also scored runs regularly. It was his first Test century and a very special performance for him.
KL Rahul also played an important role with 82 runs. Dhruv Jurel added a quick 51. Rahul’s innings was very useful because it stopped Sri Lanka from putting too much pressure on India’s top-order batters.
India’s total of 462 put Sri Lanka under pressure from the start. The hosts fought back through Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella, but India’s bowlers kept taking wickets apart from that partnership.
Sri Lanka Fight Back, But India Keep the Advantage
Sri Lanka’s first innings was not easy for India. Sonal Dinusha scored a good century, while Niroshan Dickwella made 80. Their partnership gave Sri Lanka some hope of cutting India’s lead.
However, Sri Lanka could not build another big partnership. Once India broke their main partnership, Sri Lanka started losing wickets quickly. India then took the lead they wanted.
India found batting harder in their second innings.
Sri Lanka’s spinners bowled well, but their fast bowlers also played an important role. They used short balls well and put pressure on the Indian batters. This helped them take wickets without depending only on spin.
India scored just 193 runs in the second innings. This could have been a problem if India had a smaller lead. But their first-innings lead was big enough. India set Sri Lanka a tough target of 372 runs.
Rishabh Pant then played the innings India needed. His quick 66 runs changed the game. It helped India set a big target with enough time left to bowl Sri Lanka out.

Suthar Delivers the Knockout Punch
The fourth innings was very important for India. Their bowlers had to finish the job. Sri Lanka needed 372 runs to win. But they also had to deal with the weather, which could reduce their time at the crease.
Sonal Dinusha fought hard again and scored 84 runs. Captain Dhananjaya de Silva also made 59. But Sri Lanka could not build enough big partnerships around them. India’s bowlers kept taking wickets and putting pressure on the hosts.
Manav Suthar was the star bowler. He took 6/55 and completed a 10-wicket match haul. His spell helped India bowl Sri Lanka out for just 206. India won the match by 165 runs. The score looked comfortable, but the final day was still tense because of the weather.
India Beat Sri Lanka — And the Rain Too
India vs Sri Lanka turned into a race against time in the final innings, with India needing to wrap things up before the rain could force a draw.
A draw would have been very disappointing for India. They had controlled most of the match, so every lost over could have caused a problem.
India knew they had to act quickly.
The bowlers kept attacking, the fielders stayed alert and the team kept looking for wickets instead of just stopping runs. This approach worked.
India got the result they wanted just in time.
It was almost the perfect ending. Within roughly five minutes of the match finishing, the rain arrived. India had managed to get the final wicket before the weather could intervene.
KL Rahul explained the thinking perfectly in his post-match conversation with Sanjay Manjrekar: “Just relieved, honestly! We kept looking at the cloud upstairs, and we knew there was one big shower coming, so we didn’t want to delay the game. We were trying to get the wickets as quickly as we can.”
India understood the situation, recognised the danger and played with the required urgency.
WTC 2025-27: India Still Fifth, But the Equation Improves
The win in Galle was very important for India because their World Test Championship (WTC) campaign had started to look difficult.
Before this Test, India were fifth with a 48.15% PCT after nine matches. This win gave them 12 points and increased their PCT to 53.33%. They are still fifth, but they have moved closer to the teams above them.
India now have eight Tests left in this WTC cycle: one more against Sri Lanka, two against New Zealand and five against Australia.
ICC WTC 2025-27 Points Table (after India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test at Galle)
| Position | Team | Played | Won | Lost | Draw | PTS | PCT |
| 1 | Australia | 9 | 7 | 2 | 0 | 84 | 77.78 |
| 2 | South Africa | 4 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 36 | 75 |
| 3 | New Zealand | 6 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 52 | 72.22 |
| 4 | Bangladesh | 5 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 40 | 66.67 |
| 5 | India | 10 | 5 | 4 | 1 | 64 | 53.33 |
| 6 | Sri Lanka | 5 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 20 | 33.33 |
| 7 | England | 13 | 4 | 8 | 1 | 38 | 24.36 |
| 8 | Pakistan | 6 | 2 | 4 | 0 | 16 | 20.83 |
| 9 | West Indies | 12 | 2 | 8 | 2 | 30 | 20.83 |
Still, India now have a clear target.
Six wins from their next eight Tests would give them 136 points from 216, or about 63% PCT. That would keep them strongly in the race, although they may still need other results to go their way.
Seven wins from eight would take India to around 68.5% PCT and give them a much better chance of reaching the top two.
So, India realistically need at least six more wins, while seven wins would be the safer target. Their five-Test series against Australia could be very important for their WTC hopes. Before the Sri Lanka series, India captain Shubman Gill had also said that the team needed around six or seven wins from their remaining Tests to stay in the race.

Most importantly, India finished the match before the rain could cause problems.
The road to the WTC final is still difficult, but India are now back in the race. More importantly, they know what they need to do.
